Chapter 1
Eight months pregnant, I overheard my husband talking to someone else:
“She’s so stupid, she must not know that the IVF baby she did for two years is me and Kaylee’s baby.”
“I only married her as a surrogate because I couldn’t bear the thought of Kaylee going through the pain of labor!”
I covered my pregnant belly and tearfully dialed three numbers:
The first to the hospital, “I’ve decided to terminate the pregnancy.”
Second to my parents, “I agree to go home and inherit billions of dollars.”
After the third call, I was silent.
The man’s magnetic and gentle voice came: “No matter what problems you encounter, I will help you solve them. As long as you want, you can always be the world’s richest man’s only bride.”
“You’re not afraid Sophia will lose it once she finds out the truth? No one wants to raise someone else’s kid–especially after carrying it for ten months.”
Zack looked at Ethan with a mocking grin.
“She’s too dumb to ever figure it out. And even if she did–what then? She’s eight months in. She’s not actually gonna go through with it. Look at her, fat as a pig. Who else would want her besides me?”
“True. Everyone knows how obsessed Sophia is with you. She’s clung to you like a damn lapdog for years. Though… I gotta admit, I’ve always wondered what a pregnant chick feels like.”
Zack’s eyes darkened with something vile, and he raised a brow at Ethan.
Ethan’s face twisted in disgust.
“She’s blown up like a balloon. Just looking at her turns my stomach. Don’t even talk to me about sex–I’d rather watch porn than look at that watermelon of a belly.”
“Well, if you’re not into it, maybe I’ll give it a shot next time. I mean it–pregnant girls are supposed to be wild.”
Zack’s filthy laugh echoed through the room, blending with Ethan’s, each chuckle slicing through my heart like a blade.
Because of IVF, I had taken endless hormone pills, endured countless injections, and watched my body swell and deform.
Since getting pregnant, Ethan kept worrying I wasn’t getting enough nutrition. He made me eat like crazy every day, which led to an oversized baby. By the fifth month, stretch marks had already crawled all over my stomach.
I used to think he cared. Now I know–he only cared about the baby. Their baby. His and Kaylee’s.
My palms clenched tight, and cold sweat soaked my back. I fled that suffocating room like my life depended on it.
Once I calmed down, I didn’t hesitate.
I called the hospital again.
“Hi. I’d like to schedule an abortion.”
I rushed there that very night. Staying another second in that house would’ve broken me.
The night doctor looked at my massive belly and asked me again and again.
“You’re already eight months in. Are you absolutely sure you want to terminate?”
“What about the father?”
“He’s dead.”
Since Ethan wanted this child so badly, I decided to give him a little gift.
The doctor saw the dead look in my eyes and said no more. He handed me the meds and the appointment slip.
“Take the pills. Come back in three days for the procedure.”
I dragged myself home with the slip in hand–only to find the code on the front door no longer worked.
Just as I was about to call, the door suddenly swung open.
I looked at the door in shock.
Chapter 2
Kaylee stepped out, wearing nothing but a sexy little slip.
“Sophia, the lights at my place went out. Ethan didn’t feel safe leaving me alone, so he asked me to move in with him for a while. He even changed the door code to my birthday so I wouldn’t forget. You don’t mind, do you?”
My eyes landed on Kaylee’s shoulder strap slipping down–clear marks on her chest, and she wasn’t even wearing a bra.
“Oh, come on. Sophia’s the understanding type. Of course, she doesn’t mind.”
Ethan lounged on the couch, shirt inside out, pants wrinkled. A suspicious wet spot had soaked into the cushion beneath him.
He stood up and pulled me into his arms.
“You just left without saying a word. You’re carrying a child, Sophia. What if something had happened to you? What would I do then?”
The tenderness in his voice made my skin crawl.
Pretending to care for me while shamelessly sleeping with his precious Kaylee in my house, even going so far as to change the door code just in case I came back unexpectedly.
I didn’t bother arguing–I just went upstairs.
That night, Ethan suddenly brought me a glass of warm milk, even though he had never cared for milk before.
“You’re in the last trimester. You need more calcium and protein now, okay? Be good. Drink it.”
I stared at the milk in his hands, eyes narrowing.
“I don’t want it.”
He looked displeased but forced a patient smile.
“I’m doing this for you and the baby. Be good. Just drink it.”
Then, without waiting for my reply, he tilted the glass and poured the milk into my mouth.
The sickly sweetness hit the back of my throat, and almost instantly, my limbs grew heavy. Drowsiness pulled me under.
In a daze, I thought I saw two figures moving together… right beside me.
I woke the next morning with my whole body aching, barely able to move.
After Ethan left for work, I reached for my phone.
I had turned on the camera the moment he gave me the milk, hiding the phone in a flowerpot.
The second I hit play, shame and fury ripped through me like fire across dry leaves.
Ethan and Kaylee had stumbled into the room right after I passed out, kissing like no one could see them. Then they fell… right next to me.
“You have no idea how it kills me watching you with her every day,” Kaylee whispered.
Ethan spat in my face, then kicked me aside like trash.
“She’s a fat cow. You think she compares to you? The only reason I’m with her is because of the baby. If I didn’t care about you, do you think I’d ever have married her? She’s not even worth a single strand of your hair.”
Kaylee’s eyes sparkled with amusement.
“Are you sure you gave her enough of the sedative?”
She reached for my clothes with a disturbing kind of calm.
“What if she finds out the truth after the baby’s born? We need leverage. Something that’ll shut her up if it comes to that.”
Ethan agreed all too quickly, helping her strip me down until I was completely exposed.
They dragged my limp body onto a stool, forcing my legs apart like some cruel display.
Ethan took photos. Kaylee adjusted my pose again and again.
Tears streamed down my face as I watched, every second of footage stabbing deeper than the last.
When the screen finally went black, I grabbed the pills the doctor gave me.
And swallowed them. Every last one.
“What are you taking?”
“It’s just calcium tablets,” I replied calmly.
Ethan finally relaxed and turned to head upstairs.
“I forgot a file. Be right back.”
As he climbed the stairs, I glanced at the phone he left on the table.
I keyed in Kaylee’s birthday.
The lock screen slid open to a wallpaper of him and Kaylee–locked in a passionate kiss.
I quickly opened his messaging app. At the very top: Kaylee. Second: a group chat with his so-called “brothers.”
I tapped into the group.
What I saw made my hands tremble–the phone nearly slipped from my grip.
Chapter 3
The chat was flooded with photos. Nude photos. From last night.
Of me.
“Damn, Ethan! Gotta say, your wife still got some curves on her!”
“Pregnant chicks hit different, huh? Wonder what she tastes like.”
“With that slutty look? Bet she’d be top–tier in any club.”
Each filthy message from Zack and the others cut deeper than the last.
Reading their vulgar comments, I felt stripped, exposed, like some animal in a cage–naked and humiliated, on display for their amusement.
“Baby, why are your eyes red?”
Ethan came back downstairs, file in hand, acting like nothing had happened.
He gently draped a blanket over my lap.
“It’s chilly today. You’re still pregnant–you’ve got to take extra care.”
He smiled. Warm. Tender.
Like a knife dipped in honey.
“Kaylee’s birthday is tonight,” he added, almost casually.
“I’m throwing her a small party here. Just a few close friends. Wear something nice, okay?”
My entire body tensed at the sound of her name.
“I’d rather stay in and rest tonight. I don’t want to be disturbed.”
His smile vanished.
“It’s just a birthday, Sophia. One day out of the year. You’re not seriously using your pregnancy to guilt me, are you? I’ve already been more than patient with you. But on this? I’m not backing down.”
I hadn’t even said much. But he was already racing to defend his precious Kaylee.
That’s the thing about love–you know when it’s missing.
The party happened anyway.
By the time I walked downstairs, all eyes were on me.
Some amused.
Some mocking.
Some filled with something darker.
“Sophia! We’re wearing the same dress! Isn’t that adorable? Great minds think alike!”
Kaylee chirped as she looped her arm through mine.
Only then did I realize–we were both in the exact same red dress.
“This dress looks way better on Kaylee, though,” Ethan said bluntly.
“Let’s be real–Sophia’s pregnant, bloated, and halfway to hideous. No grace left.”
“Now, now,” Zack chimed in with a smirk, “I think the baby bump gives her character. Kind of a… mature charm.”
He took my hand, slowly rubbing his thumb along the back of it, his gaze crawling over me like something alive.
Author’s Note: Sophia’s allure hasn’t faded one bit–some people just can’t see what they’ve already lost.
I tried to yank my hand away from Zack’s grip, but he wouldn’t let go. Ethan stood slowly from the couch and pulled me over.
“Babe, they’re just messing around. You take everything so seriously.”
I jerked my arm from his grasp, coldly.
“Have fun by yourselves. I’m going upstairs to rest.”
Just as I turned, Ethan shoved a glass of milk into my hands.
“Drink this first. It’s for calcium. Then you can go rest.”
“I don’t want it.”
His expression darkened instantly.
“I’ve already given you enough slack today. This is for your own good. Drink it.”
“Don’t be so harsh, Ethan,” Kaylee chimed in, sliding up beside us. “If Sophia doesn’t want it, don’t force her. She’s pregnant–try to be more understanding.”
She handed me a glass of warm water instead.
“Here, Sophia, have some water at least.”
I stared at the clear liquid in the cup.
“If I drink this… I can go upstairs and rest, right?”
Without waiting for an answer, I downed it in one gulp.
The warmth slid down my throat, but within seconds, my skin began to burn. Like something was crawling beneath the surface–biting, gnawing.
“What… what did you give me?”
My legs turned to lead. Then everything collapsed, and I fell into a pair of unfamiliar arms.
Through the blur, I saw Zack’s twisted grin hovering above me, his hands already moving where they shouldn’t be.
“Kaylee, you’re evil. Using the pictures might not have been enough to shut her up–so you drugged her, too? Genius. With this, even if she finds out about the baby switch, she’ll never speak up. We’ll have her right where we want her.”
“Let me go!”
I screamed with the last bit of strength I had. But it was no use.
I turned to Ethan, begging–searching for some flicker of decency left in him.
But he just tightened his arm around Kaylee and looked away.
“Be gentle,” he said coldly. “She’s still carrying my child. Our child.”
Zack’s hands roamed greedily.
“We’ll be careful. No harm will come to your precious little heir.”
